South Berwick cruises past Dirigo, Ellsworth knocks off Cumberland in 11-12 State Tournament

At the VFW Field in Hampden Saturday afternoon, District 4 South Berwick powered their way to a 12-1 win over District 5 Dirigo and District 1 Ellsworth held on for a 5-2 victory over District 6 Cumberland on opening day of the 11-12 All-Stars baseball State Tournament.

In the tournament opener, Jacob Lebel crushed two home runs and added two singles to lead South Berwick to victory. Lebel hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two run homer in the fifth inning.

CJ Davis added a solo homer in the third inning. Ryan O’neill had two doubles and a single. Parker Williams, Hunter Newsome, Burt Dow, and Jeremy Jacques all chipped in with a single.

Patrick Fallon picked up the win on the mound, going 4.2 innings and striking out 11.

Jake Rideout had a double and single to pace Dirigo, and Devin Sherer and Luke Peabody each added a single.

South Berwick will play District 3 Bangor East at 12:30 on Sunday, July 25. Dirigo will play at 3:00 on Monday.

In the second game, Ellsworth scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and carried that 2-0 lead into the fifth inning before Alex Braley provided what turned out to be the game winning runs with a three run homer for a 5-0 lead.

Cumberland rallied in the sixth and scored two runs but could not overcome the five run deficit.

Braley had a three run homer for Ellsworth. Charles Libby added two singles, and Hank Vinall chipped in with a single.

Calvin Soule and Reid Howland each had a single for Cumberland-North Yarmouth.

Ellsworth plays District 2 Camden-Rockport at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 25. Cumberland will next play at 5:30 on Monday, July 26.
