Jay slips past Bucs in final quarter

The Jay girls basketball team outscored Georges Valley 7-4 in the final stanza, but that was enough for a come from behind 37-35 win Thursday night.

Jay moves to 11-5 and sits in second place in the latest Heal Point Standings. They have two games left, at Carrabec Feb. 1 and home against Dirigo to end the regular season.

Georges Valley falls to 7-9, but more importantly is now faced with a must win in the season finale against Lisbon if they are to make the playoffs. They play Monmouth Feb. 1 however Monmouth is not worth enough points to move them up to ninth place in the Heal Point Standings. The top nine teams in Class C West will advance to the playoffs. The Bucs are currently in tenth place behind Old Orchard Beach. The Bucs are home against Monmouth Academy and on the road Feb. 3 at Lisbon.

Thursday’s game was a back and forth affair with Jay taking an 11-8 first quarter lead and Georges Valley tying it up at 19-19 at the half. The Bucs took a one point 31-30 lead into the fourth quarter where Jay was able to come back and secure the win.

Scoring for Jay were, Alexi Deering with eight points; Alexis Blodgett six; Mallory Bonnevie and Kelsea Beisaw five each; Beth Moore and Hillary Deane four each; Brittany DiPompo three; and Alannah White two.

Jay was 7-of-17 (41 percent) from the foul line and had two 3-pointers, one each from Beisaw and Bonnevie.

For Georges Valley, Kennadi Grover had 15 points; Jill Bradbury eight; Colleen Haskell six; and Beth Snow, Taylor Mazurek and Rachel Frye two each.

The Bucs were 3-of-9 from the charity stripe and had two 3-pointer, both from Grover.
