Lady Knights out shoot Golden Eagles for 43-35 win

Bangor – Sunday afternoon the Vermont Tech women’s basketball team shot just 36 per cent from the floor, but that was twice as good as the Eastern Maine Community College women (18%) and good enough for the Knights to make the trip back home a pleasant one with a 43-35 victory over the Golden Eagles at Johnston Gymnasium on the campus of EMCC.

The Eagles opened the first period with an 8-2 run over the first six minutes, but held just a 17-14 lead at half time. The Eagles shot just 17.6 per cent from the floor, including 0-for-7 fom behind the arc in the period. The Knights were slightly better shooting 27 per cent highlighted by Kelsey Ward with six points (43% shooting).

The sluggish shooting performance for EMCC continued throughout the second half with a slightly better 19 percent. The Knights dramatically improved their shooting numbers going 11-for-24 (46%) from the floor while out scoring the Eagles 29-18 in the half. Amanda Baker had the hot hand for the Knights in the half scoring 12 points on 50 per cent shooting from the floor after going just 1-for-6 (17%) in the opening half. Kelley Vellek scored eight points and Ward added seven points in the period.

Baker had an all around impressive game. She scored a game high 14 points with four rebounds and game highs of five assists and three steals with one blocked shot. Ward added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Vellek had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a block. Abby Fusco scored four points and Heather Gonier chipped in with two points.

The Knights went 18-for-50 (36%) from the floor in the game. They had two 3-point baskets on nine attempts, one each by Ward and Vellek, and they went 5-for-13 (38%) from the free throw line.

Danielle Watson topped the Eagles in scoring with 10 points (five rebounds). Caroline Weymouth and Emma Johnson each added six points. Weymouth had four rebounds and two steals, and Johnson pulled down a team high seven rebounds with two steals. Jamie Poland scored four points with five rebounds, and Britnie Jones added four points with five rebounds and two assists. Rebecca Redding and Dani Ross each had two points, and Carolyn Bess added one point.

EMCC went 12-for-66 (18%) from the floor in the game, including 0-for-15 from behind the arc. They shot 69 per cent from the charity stripe (11-for-16).

The Eagles did win the battle on the boards, as they out rebounded the Knights 43 to 28.
