Broncos defeat Oceanside for Unified Basketball Eastern Maine championship

Hampden- Before a packed gymnasium at Hampden Academy Tuesday evening, the Hampden Bronco Unified basketball team got 21 points from Isaiah Palmer to defeat the Oceanside Mariners Unified team 44-36 to claim the Eastern Maine Championship. Unified Basketball partners students with developmental disabilities (Unified Student Athlete) with students without developmental disabilities (Unified Student Partners). A partnership between the Maine Principles Association and the Special Olympics of Maine helped to introduce Unified basketball into a number of high schools in the state of Maine this winter. Hampden – On Tuesday afternoon, No. 3 Hampden Academy picked up a 34-20 win over No. 6 Oak Hill in a Unified Basketball quarterfinal game at Hampden Academy. With the victory, Hampden improves to 4-1 and moves on to the semifinal round. They will take on No. 2 Lewiston High School in Lewiston at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12. Oak Hill finishes their season at 1-5. Glenburn takes home GOLD BALL in 3/4 boys tournament

Glenburn – Sunday afternoon at the Glenburn School, the Glenburn 3rd/4th grade boys wrapped up a perfect week-end with a 35-33 victory over Ellsworth to win the Glenburn Rec tournament. Glenburn finished the two day tourney with a 6-0 record. The final standings for the tournament: Glenburn 6-0, Ellsworth 4-2, Pittsfield 2-3, Old Town 1-4, Millinocket 0-4. To get to the championship game, Glenburn held Old Town scoreless in two quarters of the semifinal game for a 26-9 win. Brandon Butterfield scored 16 points for the Chargers. Glenburn – Saturday at the Glenburn School, the Glenburn Rec hosted the 3rd/4th grade boys basketball tournament. All Glenburn tournaments are normally eight teams, but this week-end is just a 5-team tournament with all teams guaranteed at least four games. Teams included are Ellsworth, Millinocket, Old Town Rec, Pittsfield, and the host team Glenburn. In the first three games of the tournament, Glenburn, Ellsworth, and Old Town all came away with wins (Old Town 1-1). Glenburn defeated Old Town 36-24 in the opener. Glenburn – Saturday morning at the Glenburn School, the Glenburn Rec hosted the second of it’s four travel basketball tournaments as teams from Bangor, Houlton, Dover, Ellsworth, and Old Town joined the host team Glenburn in the 3rd/4th grade girls tournament. In the first three games of the morning, it was Bangor defeating Glenburn 26-12, Foxcroft over Old Town 18-13, and Bangor nipped Houlton 37-36 through two overtimes and a sudden death. Hampden – Tuesday afternoon at Hampden Academy, the Oceanside Mariners overcame a third quarter deficit to pull out a 34-33 win over the Broncos in a Unified Basketball high school contest. The Maine Principles Association and Special Olympics Maine has partnered to develop and promote Unified Sports, and introduced the first ever MPA Unified Basketball season which began in January, 2015. According to the MPA’s website, Unified Basketball partners students with developmental disabilities (Unified Student Athlete) with students without developmental disabilities (Unified Student Partners) to train, compete, and represent their school.
