Orono – As the 2014 high school season opens this week, two local high schools got things rolling on Tuesday afternoon. The Old Town Coyotes looked like they were in mid-season form as they used a combination of power, speed and solid defense to roll over the Orono Red Riots with a Mercy Rule 15-1 win in five innings at Orono High School. The Coyotes slammed three home runs, one each by Rachel Martin, Meaghan Leighton, and Kayla Madden. Glenburn – Basketball games can be won or lost at the free throw line, and Sunday afternoon the Brewer 5th/6th grade boys “B” team went 10-for-12 at the foul line including Dylan Huff’s 7-for-8 at the line in the second half for a 38-31 victory over Corinth to claim the Gold Ball in the Glenburn Rec 5/6 boys tournament. Brewer finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, while Corinth ended with a 2-2 record. Both Corinth losses came at the hands of Brewer. Glenburn – Saturday morning at the Glenburn School, the Glenburn Rec kicked off their final tournament of the basketball season with the 5th/6th grade boys tournament. Participants in the tourney include Old Town, Corinth, Hampden (2 teams), Brewer, and the host team Glenburn. In the first four games of the day, Old Town knocked off host Glenburn 27-21, Corinth defeated Hampden 2 by a score of 30-18, Old Town came on strong in the final two mi nutes to defeat Hampden 1 49-37, and Brewer cruised to a 38-10 win over Hampden 2. Glenburn – At the Glenburn School on Sunday night, Hunter Curtis scored a game high 23 points to lead the Ellsworth “A” Eagles to a 41-34 championship victory over Hermon to claim the Gold Ball in the 3rd/4th grade Glenburn Rec boys basketball tournament. Ellsworth rolled through the tournament finishing with a 5-0 record, while runner-up Hermon finished the tourney at 4-1. Glenburn – Saturday morning at the Glenburn School, the Glenburn Rec kicked off their third weekend in a series of four travel basketball tournaments with the 3rd/4th grade boys tournament. Participants include Hampden, Hermon, Old Town, Pittsfield, Newport, two teams from the Ellsworth Y, and the host team from Glenburn. In game one on the schedule, Glenburn defeated Hampden 19-15. Glenburn – Sunday night at the Glenburn School, the Foxcroft 1 girls basketball team took home the Gold Ball as Olivia Wesley and Abbi Allen both scored in double figures to lead the way. The 32-29 win for Foxcroft over Newport halted a 2-year championship streak by the Jr. Wildcats in the Glenburn Rec 5th/6th grade tournament. Foxcroft took a 7-4 first quarter lead, but Newport picked up two points with an 11-9 second quarter to make it a 16-15 Foxcroft lead at half time. Glenburn – Saturday morning at the Glenburn School, the Glenburn Rec kicked off the first of four youth basketball tournaments with the 5th/6th grade girls tournament. The eight teams in the tournament are Holbrook, Norridgewock, Ellsworth, Dover-Foxcroft (2 teams), Guilford, Newport, and host team Glenburn. In the first four games on Saturday, Holbrook defeated Glenburn 19-16, Newport breezed past Ellsworth 38-15, Dover-Foxcroft 1 cruised to a 30-14 victory over Norridgewock, and Guilford picked up a 22-10 win over Dover-Foxcroft 2.
