Orrington – Saturday morning amid the brief showers and cool breeze, the Orrington Little League held their 2016 Opening Day Ceremony at the complex located behind Center Drive School. The morning began with a parade of all teams down to the little league baseball field where each player was recognized, coaches introduced, and sponsors being listed. Following all the introductions, a Junior Home Run Derby was held on the baseball field, and a Pitch, Hit & Run took place on the softball field. Theberge dominates Wildcats, Hawks start with Mercy Rule win

Hermon – In 2014 the Hermon Hawks softball team captured the State Championship with a 6-0 win over Wells, and in 2015 they came up two runs short falling to Yarmouth in the State title game. Looking for a third consecutive trip to the State championship game, Hermon began their season in a big way as Senior Karli Theberge dominated from inside the circle and the Hawks scattered 12 hits in a 13-1 six inning Mercy Rule win over the Presque Isle Wilcats in a mutual season opener at Hermon High School Thursday afternoon. Old Town frosh silences Orono bats in season opener

Old Town – After Mother Nature put a halt to opening day for the Old Town and Orono softball teams on Tuesday, both teams hit the field on Wednesday and Old Town freshman Olivia Albert dominated from inside the circle to help guide the Coyotes to a 14-1 victory over the Red Riots in a mercy Rule 5-inning game. Glenburn – Thursday afternoon at the Glenburn School, the middle school softball team was was hard at work preparing for the 2016 season. Head Coach Chad LaBree put the girls through infield and outfield practice catching ground balls and fly balls while assistant coach Sam Besse worked with the teams pitchers. All players got a round of batting practice to close out the day. The Chargers, in this early portion of getting ready for a season, have a few problems for the coaches to try and iron out. Brewer-Frazee leads Hampden Unified basketball to Northern Maine Championship

Hampden – Ask any player on the Hampden Academy Unified basketball team about all for one and they will all tell you “we are unified, we are one”. On Tuesday night, Kenny Brewer-Frazee took charge for the Broncos and scored a game high 22 points to lead No. 1 Hampden to a 46-26 victory over No. 6 Lewiston in the Northern Maine Championship game. Hampden will head to Lisbon on Thursday to take on Southern Maine Champion Lisbon High School, who defeated Deering-Portland 44-24, in a 6:00 p.m. game for the Unified basketball State Championship. Oakfield rallies in overtime to win Glenburn Rec 5/6 boys tourney Gold Ball

Glenburn – After giving up a 10-point first quarter lead, the Oakfield Heat rallied in overtime to hand Gardiner their first loss with a 42-35 victory to claim the Glenburn Rec 5th/6th grade boys basketball tournament Gold Ball. Oakfield jumped out to a 14-4 first quarter lead and looked like they may roll over Gardiner, but the Tigers roared back with a 12-4 second quarter to trail Oakfield by just two points at 18-16 heading into half time.
